Bertie Blackman grew up in Paddington in Sydney's Inner East. She began playing African percussion at the age of twelve, and found her true expression in guitar at the age of fifteen. Bertie has become one of the most prolofic performers around Sydney's Inner city venues, where she has developed a dedicated following.
Taking inspiration from an eclectic array of musicians such as Bjork, Erykah Badu, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, and Radiohead, Bertie's songs are at once heartfelt and uniquely her own. With experience in composition for film and television under her belt her talent has also been appreciated by artists such as Ben Lee who has co-written with her.
Take a slice of jazz, soul and groove, then dice and shake her rich vocal range with equally expressive guitar chords and rhythms and you will get, what she calls, urban folk.
